A Word from the President of the Hakusan Tedorigawa Geopark Promotion Council (Mayor of Hakusan City)

Today the Hakusan Tedorigawa Geopark was officially designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
I am incredibly happy and proud to hear this news.

I would like to express my gratitude to everyone that has been involved since the Promotion Council was formed in 2010. The efforts of all members of our Constituent Groups, Scientific Advisory Council, Learning Supporters, Partner Groups, and Tourist Guides, as well as others involved in the area have brought this designation to fruition, and I am deeply grateful.

Since December of last year, when the Global Geoparks Council recommended us for designation, former mayor Noriaki Yamada was suppressing his joy in expectation of the official day of designation. However, he unfortunately passed away just months before that day could come. I am certain that he is looking upon this moment now and openly expressing his joy.

The geopark program is not simply the protection and conservation of geological heritage, but also includes the promotion of education, and development of the local community, etc. that utilizes these heritages.
Furthermore, the promotion of these kinds of activities can contribute to better development of the region, as well as maintaining and developing the global environment and international community.

We have now only just reached the starting point of our journey as a UNESCO Global Geopark. However going forward, whilst remaining strictly aware of the connection between this region and the world, I’d like us to continue to build and expand upon our activities.

Former Mayor Mr. Yamada often told me that "geoparks are people" with great passion. I would like to continue his passion, and going forward, connect the activities of our UNESCO Global Geopark to more people, helping to develop not only this region, but to build residents who will lead the world and society into the future, and continue to contribute to the development of the Hakusan Tedorigawa area.

For now, I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate this UNESCO Global Geopark designation with everyone. However, looking ahead to future activities, I would like to work with a renewed sense of purpose so that I can play a leading role in geopark activities throughout the world. And so, I ask for your continued support and effort. Thank you.
