International Intensive Course on UNESCO Global Geoparks 2025

From June 20 to 29, I attended the International Intensive Course on UNESCO Global Geoparks held in Lesvos UNESCO Global Geopark, Greece.

Through these grueling 10 days, I was able to learn about the basics of geoparks and their management, obtaining valuable information, and seeing a number of useful examples. Furthermore, a number of tours were held throughout the geopark, where I was able to experience first-hand some of the ways that the Lesvos Geopark is undertaking management, and I was able to compare the differences and similarities between the Hakusan Tedorigawa Geopark.

During one of the trips, the Anemotia area really stood out to me. Here a local group revitalized a formerly over-grazed mountainside, and is now growing ancestral grapes, using an eco-friendly agricultural style that regenerates the soil as the farming continues. This group involves a number of locals, and conducts workshops for people interested in learning about the agricultural style. Their sustainable approach to living with the land was very inspiring.

The win made by the group was all very delicious, and made me want to support them even more. In order to express my gratitude towards their efforts, I gave them a souvenir that I had brought with me from the Hakusan Tedorigawa Geopark.

I would like to continue to use what I learned from the course to improve on the Hakusan Tedorigawa Geopark.
